CANBERRA STADIUM MASTER PLAN

ABOUT THE PROJECT

Throughout Australia major stadiums are being redeveloped or upgraded.  Facilities and standards at Canberra Stadium are beginning to fall behind international requirements to host major events.

In accordance with the Territory’s objectives to improve sport and recreation opportunities, the ACT Government have launched a project to develop a master plan for the venue.

The master plan will provide a framework to guide the development of Canberra Stadium over the next 25 years.  It will be separate from the master plan for Manuka Oval which is being prepared concurrently.

It is intended that the master plan be sophisticated and innovative, supporting the development of a contemporary sporting stadia that provides an exciting venue for sporting activities and for spectators.

The master plan will incorporate international directions in planning for stadiums and environmentally sustainable design.  It will also include appropriate commercial activities.

The master plan will combine the needs of existing and future users with the needs and concerns of other key stakeholders.

The master planning process will include the development of options taking into account:

  • current and potential future users of the venue
  • site assessment and analysis
  • the views of stakeholders and the community
  • experience from other similar venues
  • national and international standards
  • issues that are identified as being of concern
  • capital costs for different options

The project is being managed by Territory Venues and Events (TVE) of the Department of Territory and Municipal Services, and they have appointed a team of consultants led by KPMG to undertake the project.  Other members of the consultant team are:

The ACT Government is committed to consulting with the Canberra community during the development of the master plan.  Purdon Associates will be responsible for community consultations.

More information is available on this site about the master plan and the options for the future development of the Stadium and how you can become involved.

Input from the community will be taken into account in the development of the master plan.
