CANBERRA STADIUM MASTER PLAN
BACKGROUND
There are several reasons for preparing a master plan at this time:
- Canberra Stadium is the premier sporting facility in the Territory and it contributes significantly to the local community and economy. Leasing the Stadium to organisations such as the Canberra Raiders and the CA Brumbies that host their own sporting events generates revenue for the Territory. The sporting and other events contribute to economic activity in Canberra that otherwise would not have occurred.
- The existing facilities are ageing and need upgrading. For example there is a need to upgrade the player amenities, spectator facilities, the entry gates and ticketing, roofing and the media centre.
- International and national standards for sports stadium are changing. If the Territory is to retain its existing major football teams, the Stadium needs to be upgraded to meet these standards.
- Seating capacity has to be expanded so that the Territory could host potential future rugby union test matches and to support a possible Australian Soccer World Cup bid.
- There are opportunities to increase weekday usage in the vicinity of the Stadium by developing related commercial activities. These opportunities require further study and should be explored.
OBJECTIVES
The objectives of the master plan are to:
- Implement the Government’s objectives in ‘Growing Canberra’s Future and Improved Sport and Recreation Opportunities’
- Ensure that Canberra Stadium maintains its position as the premier sports stadium in Canberra and the region
- Increase the appeal of the Canberra Stadium as a broad-based entertainment venue and business centre
- Create attractive, safe, and functional facilities
- Maintain the international status/standing of Canberra Stadium
