Event Day Traffic Management Plan
The implementation of event day traffic management plans assist in maximising the safety to patrons entering and departing Canberra Stadium. This includes patrons travelling by private vehicle, public transport, and taxis, on walkways and on bicycle.
The traffic management plans were prepared by an expert traffic consultant in consultation with the ACT Government and other major stakeholders. An experienced local contractor implements traffic management plans on behalf of Canberra Stadium.
The key objectives of the traffic management plans are:
- Maximise the use of public transport and ensure clear passage for buses where possible.
- Safeguard patrons using the walkways into and from Canberra Stadium.
- Maximise the use of public roads to ensure a clear passage for private vehicles before, during and after major events at Canberra Stadium.
The following list identifies the major initiatives used for pre and post game traffic management plans.
Pre-Game traffic management
- Battye Street – Three lanes heading towards Canberra Stadium (West) with one lane open for cars departing.
- Watkins Street is closed off to provide a clear passage for pedestrians walking towards Canberra Stadium and prevent cars potentially travelling in the wrong direction.
- Agar Street – Open only for an event day. No right turn permitted onto Masterman Street from Agar Street.
- Agar Street/Masterman Street – two lanes heading towards Canberra Stadium (East) with one lane open for cars departing.
The pre-game traffic management will revert to post-game traffic management at approximately half time of the first grade match.
Post-Game traffic management
- Battye Street – Four lanes heading away from Canberra Stadium. No lanes are open for vehicle entry into Canberra Stadium. The only option for vehicles wishing to pick up patrons is via Ginninderra Drive, on to Braybrooke Street, left at the round about onto Masterman Street, right on to Leverrier Street and pick up is available outside the AIS Arena.
- Watkins Street is closed off.
- No right turn permitted onto Battye Street from Eade Street or Purdie Street to prevent vehicles turning into one-way traffic.
- No right turn permitted onto Masterman Street from Leverrier Street.
- All traffic departing Canberra Stadium from the East Car Park must exit via Agar St.
- Masterman Street from the East Car Park is three lanes heading away from Canberra Stadium. No lanes are open for vehicle entry on the East Car Park.
- No vehicles are permitted to enter Agar Street until approximately 1 hour after the game has completed.
Normal road rules apply after the traffic management equipment is removed and all lanes have opened.
