Government seeks naming rights sponsor for Canberra Stadium
The ACT Government is seeking a naming rights sponsor for Canberra Stadium with a minimum commitment of five to 10 years.
The sponsorship fee paid by the naming rights sponsor will defray some of the current maintenance and upgrade costs of up to $2 million a year and assist with the Government’s medium-term plans to radically improve the stadium with a $70 million overhaul over the next decade.
The ideal naming rights sponsor will:
- be one who’s corporate values align with the values of the ACT Government and the Canberra community;
- be a publicly listed or local company that wishes to make a strong positive impact on the Canberra and/or national market;
- not be a direct competitor of our major hirers – the Brumbies and Raiders.
Canberra is the most active and healthy community in the country and the sponsorship will help to keep us in this position by helping to enhance our sports grounds and facilities.
We envisage a sponsored Canberra Stadium will further enhance Canberra’s reputation as Australia’s sporting capital.
The Government will seek a naming rights sponsor for the venue in advertisements to be published tomorrow and on Thursday in the Australian Financial Review.
The opportunity will also be advertised on relevant industry websites including www.sponsorshipnews.com.au and www.sponsorshiphq.com.au.

FANS URGED TO GET TO THE RAIDERS GAME EARLY
Canberrans are being encouraged to leave early to the Raiders home semi-final game on Friday night or use one of ACTION’s free shuttle services from interchanges.
“This is the first sell-out game at Canberra Stadium for several years so I urge people to leave early,” said Neale Guthrie, General Manager, Territory Venues and Events.
“While ample parking is available at the game and Roads ACT will program the traffic lights as best as possible, clearly the large number of cars travelling to the venue means it will take longer than normal to get a park. The entry gates will also be very busy so I urge people not to leave it to the last minute to arrive at the ground.

CANBERRA READY TO HOST WORLD CUP FOOTBALL
15th May 2010
Canberra will contribute $100 million towards a new, world-class football stadium in the national capital, if Australia wins the right to host the FIFA World Cup football tournament in either 2018 or 2022.
Announcing the pledge today, Chief Minister Jon Stanhope said the Territory had agreed to a cost-sharing arrangement with the Commonwealth on the stadium.
"A major stadium of this type would obviously be well beyond the capacity of the ACT to afford by itself, and this is an opportunity - if the bid succeeds - to secure a magnificent piece of sporting infrastructure for the Territory," Mr Stanhope said.
"The stadium will be part of the Australian Institute of Sport precinct, and will operate under similar arrangements to the existing stadium. The ACT Government contribution is capped at $100 million in today's dollars."
Mr Stanhope said that as Australia's national capital, it was fitting that Canberra should host matches in what was one of the world's leading sporting events, attracting a television audience of well over one billion.
"If Australia wins the bid, Canberra is expected to host up to five matches involving the top 32 football nations in the world," Mr Stanhope said. Read More...

CANBERRA WILL HAVE TO WAIT FOR A-LEAGUE TEAM
Football fans in the ACT will have to wait to get a local A-League team, after the Football Federation of
Australia today announced that the next A-League team would be based in Western Sydney, rather
than Canberra.
Acting Sports Minister Jon Stanhope said the announcement would deeply disappoint many thousands
of soccer players and fans in the ACT and he congratulated the A-League4Canberra consortium, led
by Mr Ivan Slavich, for running a hard race and fighting hard to have the next A-League team based in
the nation’s capital.
The community-based campaign attracted more than 2000 individual foundation members, as well as
some of Canberra’s most prominent and proud businesses as foundation corporate members.
“I think Canberra made a good case to be considered as the base for the A-League’s next new team,
and it is of course deeply disappointing and somewhat frustrating that the FFA, which acknowledged
the strength of our application, has chosen Western Sydney instead as home base for the League’s
12th team,” Mr Stanhope said. Read more...

CANBERRA TO HOST ANOTHER QANTAS WALLABIES TEST IN 2010
Canberra will host a Test for the second year in succession when the Qantas Wallabies play Rugby World Cup quarter-finalist Fiji at Canberra Stadium next June. Australian Rugby Union has today released the 2010 Bundaberg Rum Rugby Series inbound program. It involves an international season-opener against Fiji on Saturday, 5 June, in the national capital, followed by a two-Test showdown with England and a one-off game against Ireland. The Bundaberg Rum Tri Nations draw will also be unveiled before the end of the month. However, ARU has confirmed today that one of the two Bledisloe Cup Tests in Australia next year will be played in Melbourne. ARU took a Test to Canberra for the first time since 2000 when the Qantas Wallabies played Italy on 13 June this year. The Qantas Wallabies won 31-8 with rookie James O’Connor collecting a hat trick of tries in front of a crowd of more than 21,000. “Canberra embraced the return of International Rugby,” said ARU Managing Director and CEO John O’Neill. “There was a real buzz about the city and the media coverage was great. “When it came to deciding where we would stage the Test against Fiji next season, the experience of this year certainly weighed in Canberra’s favour.” Mr O’Neill said the Fijians, apart from boasting crowd-pleasing flamboyance and flair, would also return to Australia – for the first time since the countdown to the 2007 Rugby World Cup – with an impressive addition to their portfolio. “Those who followed the Rugby World Cup two years ago will know Fiji beat Canada, Japan and, most importantly, Wales to reach the quarter finals,” he added. “While upsetting the Welsh was a major shock, the Fijians almost delivered another unforgettable giant-killing act.” Fiji played South Africa for a place in the semi-finals and at one stage in the second half drew level at 20-all with the Springboks in Marseilles. South Africa eventually shook clear of the islanders to win 37-20. The Fijian Test against the Qantas Wallabies will kick off a highly-anticipated 2010 Bundaberg Rum Rugby Series. The Australians will open a two-Test series against England at Subiaco Oval in Perth the following week. The two arch rivals will clash again at ANZ Stadium in Sydney on Saturday, 19 June. Completing the Bundaberg Rum Rugby Series inbound tour program, to be played over four successive weekends, the Qantas Wallabies will face Six Nations champion Ireland at Suncorp Stadium in Brisbane on Saturday, 26 June. “It is an exciting schedule, a challenging program, before the Qantas Wallabies head into the Bundaberg Rum Tri Nations,” said Mr O’Neill. “Fiji reached the quarter-finals at the 2007 Rugby World Cup. “Ireland won the Grand Slam earlier this year with an unbeaten campaign against England, France, Wales, Scotland and Italy. The Irish are currently the premier team in Europe. “England finished second on the Six Nations ladder in 2009 and had a comprehensive win over France. So the quality of competition awaiting the Qantas Wallabies is not to be under estimated. “We should have a reasonable gauge of where we stand against England and Ireland during November too, when the Qantas Wallabies embark on their Grand Slam tour. “It will be the first Grand Slam attempt since the 1984 side marched unbeaten through the UK and Ireland in the four Tests they played. “Fittingly, this Grand Slam tour will come on the 25th anniversary of that magnificent achievement.” 2010 BUNDABERG RUM RUGBY SERIES JUNE TESTS

MARINERS RETURN TO CAPITAL
After making their first Hyundai A-League trip to Canberra a success with a 2-1 win over Perth in September, the Central Coast Mariners will return to the nation’s capital for a huge double header on Saturday 31 October.
The Mariners’ Westfield W-League team will hit the Canberra Stadium turf first when they clash with the ACT’s own Canberra United at 4:15pm, before the Hyundai A-League side tackles Adelaide United at 7:00pm.
These two matches will see the relationship between the Central Coast and Canberra strengthen even further, after several successful jaunts to the capital in the past, to forge ties with the ACT Government, Capital Football, A-League4Canberra and Territory Venues & Events.
After making a strong start to the Hyundai A-League season, the Mariners’ will be hoping to make Round 13 a lucky one, with a Halloween victory over Adelaide, while the Westfield W-League side will be desperately seeking victory over a side they enjoyed one victory, but also suffered one defeat against last season.
The Mariners next match of the Hyundai A-League 2009/10 season at Canberra Stadium will be against Adelaide on Saturday, 31 October. Kick-off in the W-League match is 4:15pm, and A-League at 7:00pm. Tickets for this match are available online at www.ticketek.com.au or by phoning 132 849.

on Adelaide United.

CHIEF MINISTER UNVEILS MAL MENINGA STATUE
Chief Minister and Minister for the Arts Jon Stanhope MLA has today unveiled a sculpture to honour Raiders great Mal Meninga at Canberra Stadium. Proudly commissioned and funded by the ACT Government the sculpture is part of the Government’s broad-ranging public art program.
“I am pleased to launch this remarkable new work of art, which will now stand to honour one our greatest rugby league legends,” Mr Stanhope said.
“During my time as Chief Minister, a wide range of public works of art from the kinetic work in Yarra Glen to this work of art to honour Mal Meninga have been installed across our city. Public art is one of the most important ways that the ACT Government contributes to the cultural life of our city.
“Mal Meninga is an Australian Rugby League legend. As a player he was a legendary centre, counted among the best players of the 20th Century.”
Sculptor artist Cathy Weiszmann was commissioned to produce the work, which now stands within the Canberra Stadium. Ms Weiszmann has previously created three life sized works for the Sydney Cricket Ground of Dally Messenger, Fred Spofforth and legendary cricket spectator and South’s supporter ‘Yabba’.
“Ms Weiszmann is a sculptor of rare ability and she has created what will be a highly regarded piece of sculpture.”
The iconic pose of Mal used for the sculpture was selected by the Canberra Raiders as perhaps the most triumphant of Mal’s football career with the Raiders. It depicts him scoring the last try of his illustrious career in the final minutes of the 1994 Grand Final. This image is depicted on the Mal Meninga medal presented to the Raiders best and fairest player each year.
“Mal is acknowledged by all rugby league fans, and I believe by all football fans of any description, as the greatest rugby league player ever to play in the national capital,” said Mr Stanhope.
Cathy Weiszmann’s bronze sculpture of Meninga is positioned at the forecourt level of the Mal Meninga Grandstand in the Canberra Stadium, alongside the well recognised sculpture of Laurie Daley.
This new work of art forms part of the Territory Government’s public art collection and more information about public art can be found at www.arts.act.gov.au/publicart
